Three types of fraud to watch out for

  • Money muling

Money muling helps criminal syndicates remain anonymous while moving funds around the world. A money mule is someone who lets criminals use their account to hold funds, either by giving them direct control over their account or by moving money on the criminals’ behalf.

A convicted money mule can receive a prison sentence of up to 14 years.

  • Social engineering scams

This type of scam is where fraudsters gain trust through impersonation and deception before tricking you into handing over confidential information or transferring money to them.

  • Account takeovers

Account takeovers happen when cybercriminals gather stolen account details and information to hack into your account or open an account in your name.

Tell-tale signs of fraud

  1. The promise of quick or easy money
  2. Calls or messages that ask you to move your money urgently
  3. Requests to use your account to transfer money to another account
  4. Poor spelling and grammar in emails and messages
